Tetramethylorthocarbonate (TMO) is a colorless liquid with a boiling point of 111°C. It is used as a modifier in pharmaceutical preparations and as an optical sensor. Tetramethylorthocarbonate has been used to modify the surface of polymeric films, which may be due to its ability to react with methoxy groups on the film's surface. TMO also has been used as an optical sensor for detecting pyrimidine compounds such as uracil in the presence of hydroxyl groups or amides. The vibrational and optical properties of TMO have been studied by means of infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
