Tetramethylbutylamine binds to the hydroxyl group of cholesterol and reacts with the chloride ion to form a monocarboxylic acid. This reaction prevents the synthesis of cholesterol and leads to the death of fungus cells. Tetramethylbutylamine has been shown to have activity against Trichophyton mentagrophytes, a type of fungus that causes athlete's foot.
