Tris(trimethylsilyl)-phosphine is a non-coordinating reagent that is used to prepare reactive phosphorus compounds. It reacts with fatty acids, such as stearic acid, to produce phospholipids in the presence of a base. Tris(trimethylsilyl)-phosphine also reacts with chloromethylated polyethers and halides to form chloromethylated polyether phosphines. This reaction has been studied extensively using synthetic and natural fatty acids and chlorinated polyethers. Tris(trimethylsilyl)-phosphine is activated by diphenyl ether, which increases its reactivity. The activation energy for this reaction is found to be -26 kJ/mol.
