4-Tert-butylbenzoic acid vinyl ester (4TBBAVE) is a monomer that is used in the production of polymers. It copolymerizes with styrene to form an ethylenically unsaturated polymer. 4TBBAVE can be used as a sustainable monomer, because it does not contain any hazardous chemicals and is biodegradable. The process of synthesizing 4TBBAVE involves the stepwise addition of an organocatalyst to acetone, followed by transesterification with benzoate. This reaction system produces 4TBBAVE in high yield and purity, which can then be used to fabricate polymers. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to study the chemical structure and physical properties of the resulting polymer. The incorporation of 4TBBAVE into polystyrene has been shown to produce iridescent or metallic effects due to its reactivity with light at different wavelengths.
