The chlorides of thallium(I) cyclopentadienide are prepared by the stepwise addition of chlorine to the metal. The monochloride (TlCl), chloride (TlCl), and trichloride (TlCl) have been characterized by x-ray diffraction. The halogeno anion of TlCl has been observed in solution, with the chloride ion as a major product. NMR spectra show three resonances for TlCl and two for TlBr.
