Tramazoline is a centrally acting respiratory stimulant that is used in the treatment of central apnea. It is believed to stimulate the cholinergic receptors and increase the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid, which stimulates nerve cells to produce dopamine. Tramazoline has been shown to be effective in the treatment of occipital cortex tissue culture and has also demonstrated a pressor effect on rat striatal fat cells. Tramazoline may act as an absorption enhancer through its nitrogen atoms, which would allow it to penetrate into the nasal cavity.
