Trichloroacetic acid is a sodium salt that is used to dissolve proteins in biological samples. It is also used as a disinfectant and antiseptic. Trichloroacetic acid has been shown to be toxic to cells by inhibiting the synthesis of DNA duplexes, leading to cell death. The use of trichloroacetic acid for this purpose has been studied in wild-type strains and in human serum. Trichloroacetic acid is often used together with sodium trifluoroacetate, which increases the solubility of the molecule and helps it penetrate tissue better.
