Thiophthalazone is an alkoxycarbonyl compound that has the ability to form a complex with metal ions and hydrochloric acid. It is used as an occlusion agent in the treatment of eye conditions, such as iritis, iritis-scleritis, and uveitis. Thiophthalazone can be activated by water vapor or nitrous acid to form toxic chloride ion and other haloalkyl derivatives, which cause muscle paralysis and death in insects. Thiophthalazone also has pesticidal activity against a variety of insects.
