Tetramethylammonium chloride is an antimicrobial agent that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria at optimum concentrations. It is a crystalline solid with a melting point of -95°C and a boiling point of 103°C. Tetramethylammonium chloride has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by inhibiting their ability to synthesize proteins, which are vital for cell division. This process can be achieved through transfer reactions in which tetramethylammonium chloride reacts with metal hydroxides, such as zirconium oxide, forming glycol ethers. These glycol ethers react with hydrogen fluoride molecules to form reactive radicals that have the ability to bind covalently with DNA bases, thereby preventing DNA replication and transcription. The analytical method used for this substance is X-ray crystallography in conjunction with electron diffraction techniques.
