Thiamphenicol glycinate HCl is a white crystalline powder that is soluble in dimethylformamide. It is used as an antibiotic for the treatment of bacterial infections, which include gram-negative bacteria and chlamydia. Thiamphenicol glycinate HCl has been found to have good water solubility and a high degree of stability in human plasma. Pharmacokinetic studies show that the drug has a low rate of absorption, high protein binding, slow excretion, and low permeability across the blood-brain barrier. Thiamphenicol glycinate HCl also exhibits neuron-protective properties when used to treat meningitis caused by an infectious virus (e.g., herpes simplex virus).
