Thiobenzoic acid is a chemical that belongs to the class of picolinic acids. It can be synthesized in the laboratory from picolinic acid and phosphite, or it may be obtained from natural sources such as thiobenzoates. Thiobenzoic acid exhibits high cytotoxicity against various human cancer cells, which is due to its ability to form a reactive nitrogen species with two adjacent thiol groups. The reaction of this nitrogen species with a sulfhydryl group on an adjacent protein causes a cross-linkage between the proteins, leading to cell death. Thiobenzoic acid has been shown to react with hydrochloric acid to form thiobenzoate, which is then reduced by alkoxy radicals to produce the final product, pleuromutilin.
