(Z)-11-Tetradecenal is a synthetic cuticular hydrocarbon that is found in the pheromones of lepidopteran species. This compound has been shown to be important for copulatory behavior and chemical communication between males and females. It also has synergistic effects with other chemicals, such as aldehydes, which are also found in insect pheromones. The biosynthesis of (Z)-11-tetradecenal starts from fatty acid, which is then converted into an alcohol by the action of an enzyme. The alcohol then undergoes oxidation by cytochrome P450 to produce the corresponding aldehyde. This reaction will continue until all of the fatty acid has been converted into (Z)-11-tetradecenal.
