It can be prepared by the reaction of caproic acid with trifluoroacetic acid, followed by the addition of chloride to produce a precipitate. Trimethyl(tributylstannyl)silane is synthesized from recycled chlorobenzene and trimethyl-tributyltin chloride. The product has been shown to selectively stabilize terminal alkynes and terminal alkenes by cleaving their carbon-carbon bonds at temperatures below -100°C. This reaction requires time for completion, typically 10 hours or more.
