Tridecane is a hydrocarbon found in crude oil. It is used in the preparation of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) stationary phases and as a model system for studying reactions of hydroxy methyl, acid formation, thermal expansion, light exposure, and malonic acid. Tridecane has shown to be toxic to animals by causing metabolic disorders. The mechanism of this toxicity is thought to be due to the presence of hydroxyl groups on the molecule that are capable of reacting with nucleophilic functional groups on biomolecules. Tridecane may also act as a light emitter when it undergoes phase transition from solid to liquid form.
