The reaction mechanism involves nucleophilic attack of the chlorine atom on the aromatic ring followed by proton transfer to the aniline nitrogen. 2-tert-Butylaniline can also be synthesized from diphenyl ether and ammonia, which react to form 2-tert-butylaniline and water. The molecular modelling of this compound has been studied extensively by crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction.
