Tetrabutylammonium tribromide is an organic compound that is a strong oxidizing agent. It has been used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and other inflammatory diseases. The mechanism for this reaction is not clear, but it has been proposed to involve a radical chain reaction. The reactive site on the molecule may be a hydroxyl group or an unshared electron pair from the carbonyl group. Tetrabutylammonium tribromide reacts with fatty acids to form quinoline derivatives which are then reduced by hydrogen to form benzoquinones.
