p-(Trifluoromethyl)benzoic acid (p-TFBA) is an antimycotic and antimicrobial agent that is a white solid. It is soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, and ether. p-TFBA has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria at concentrations of 2.5-10 micromolar, but not fungi. It also inhibits the growth of some amine oxidases, including fluvoxamine maleate. The exact mechanism of action for p-TFBA is unknown, but it may be due to its ability to react with amines to form a covalent bond and create a reactive radical species that damages DNA or proteins in cells. The reaction with nitrogen atoms can lead to the formation of nitroso compounds which are known carcinogens.
