D-Thyroxine sodium salt is a drug that is used for the treatment of hypothyroidism. It has been shown to increase the metabolic rate and cardiac output in humans, as well as having long-term efficacy. D-Thyroxine sodium salt inhibits the conversion of T4 to T3 by inhibiting 5'-deiodinase, leading to increased levels of T4. This drug also increases the thermogenic rate and energy expenditure by stimulating brown adipose tissue, which leads to an increase in oxygen consumption and heat production. D-Thyroxine sodium salt has a number of side effects, including cardiac arrhythmia, hyperthyroidism, insomnia, and gastrointestinal disturbances.
D-Thyroxine sodium salt is a chiral compound consisting of two enantiomers: levothyroxine (L) and dextrothyroxine (D). The L form is biologically active while the D form is biologically inactive.
