The reduction of tetrahydrofuran to tetrahydro-3-furanmethanol is facilitated by sodium borohydride and oxygenated with ozone. This reaction occurs in an organic solvent, such as benzene or chloroform, at room temperature. Tetrahydro-3-furanmethanol can also be synthesized by reduction of furfural with sodium borohydride in the presence of a catalytic amount of acid or alkali metals such as lithium, potassium, or sodium. Tetrahydrofuran is reduced to tetrahydro-3-furanmethanol via the use of sodium borohydride in aqueous solution at room temperature.
