Thermopsine is a peptide that is derived from the venom of the Sepia officinalis. Thermopsine has been shown to have clinical relevance in autoimmune diseases, cervical cancer, and as a potential biomarker for cancer treatment. It is effective against tumor cells by binding to their mitochondria and inducing mitochondrial membrane potential collapse by inhibiting the production of ATP. This leads to cell death. Thermopsine also inhibits human serum phosphorus pentoxide quinolizidine alkaloids (PSQA) and prevents the formation of cyclic AMP (cAMP).
