Tetraphenylphosphonium Chloride is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the cell nuclei. It has been shown to be active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Tetraphenylphosphonium Chloride inhibits the synthesis of mitochondrial membrane potential, which leads to the inhibition of enzyme activities in mitochondria. This allows for use as an anti-cancer drug by inhibiting tumour cell proliferation. Tetraphenylphosphonium Chloride also binds to DNA and alters its structure, preventing transcription and replication. The x-ray crystal structures show that this compound binds to the phosphate group in DNA and interacts with DNA bases through hydrogen bonding interactions.
