Triethoxyfluorosilane is a volatile, reactive compound that is used in analytical chemistry. Under normal conditions, it reacts with hydroxyl groups to form fluorides. It is also an excellent chain-transfer agent because it transports other molecules at high rates. The rate of transport depends on the concentration and the nature of the chemical being transported. Triethoxyfluorosilane can be used to synthesize unsaturated alkyl compounds by reacting with a triple bond such as alkynes or acetylenes. It has been shown to have an activation energy of 23 kJ/mol for the reaction with alkynes, which is higher than that for most other alkylating agents.
