Vinyltriacetoxysilane is a polymer that is used as a matrix for the preparation of particles. It is a reactive compound that reacts with potassium dichromate to produce silica particles. The reaction mechanism starts with the formation of an organic solution, which in turn reacts with hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate to produce a light-sensitive coordination complex. This complex then reacts with vinyltriacetoxysilane and potassium dichromate to form particles. Vinyltriacetoxysilane has been shown to be reactive, leading to increased thermal expansion, as seen in its particle form. It has also been shown to absorb water vapor when exposed to light, which can lead to decreased reactivity and particle size.
