Beschreibung

Valerenic acid is a bioactive phytochemical found in Valeriana officinalis (common valerian) that has been shown to have an effect on physiological function. Valerenic acid was found to increase the locomotor activity of mice and rats, as well as their time spent on the rotating rod test. The effects of valerenic acid were not seen when the animals were treated with trifluoroacetic acid, which prevented oxidation of valerenic acid. This suggests that the effects are due to its antioxidant properties. Valerenic acid also has a protective effect against cell lysis and DNA damage caused by free radicals in vitro, suggesting it may have therapeutic benefits for treating neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
