Yttrium oxide nanoparticles are used in the production of ceramic materials and as a catalyst. Yttrium oxide is resistant to water vapor and has a high melting point, making it a good material for high-temperature applications. Yttrium oxide nanoparticles have been shown to inhibit mitochondrial membranes, which may be due to their ability to bind with the hydroxyl group on the surface of mitochondria. This binding inhibits the formation of ATP, causing a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential. Yttrium oxide nanoparticles also have a thermal expansion coefficient that is similar to that of zirconium oxide, which may be beneficial in cases where thermal expansion must be matched closely between two materials. The biological properties of yttrium oxide nanoparticles are still unknown.
