Zinc sulfate is a salt of zinc and sulfuric acid. It is used in the treatment of infectious diseases, such as paratyphoid fever and leprosy, by stimulating the immune system. Zinc sulfate has been shown to be effective against rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory diseases. It also has a hypoglycemic effect when it binds to picolinic acid, which causes an increase in insulin production. Zinc sulfate is used as an electrolyte in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to assess renal function. This compound can also cause cardiac effects and toxicological studies have shown that it may cause decreased iron homeostasis when combined with iron supplements or antacids containing aluminum hydroxide.
