Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid that is found in the macula of the eye. This means that it does not accumulate in tissues, but instead leaves through excretion from the body. Zeaxanthin can be extracted from plants such as corn (zea mays) and spinach (spinacia oleracea), or it can be synthesized chemically from fats or oils.
