Zirconium hydrogenphosphate is an inorganic compound that can be synthesized by reacting sodium hydroxide with ammonium zirconium phosphate. It is used as a catalyst for the polymerization of acrylic acid, but has shown to have antimicrobial properties against bacteria and fungi. The protonation of the zirconium center is responsible for its antimicrobial activity. Zirconium hydrogenphosphate also shows high resistance to organic solvents and high temperatures. The carbonyl group on the zirconium center provides protection against oxidation, which leads to low activation energies. This material can be used as a solid catalyst in organic reactions because it does not react with water vapor or hydrochloric acid (HCl). Zirconium hydrogenphosphate can also be detected using plasma mass spectrometry and gravimetric analysis, which are methods that are sensitive to the presence of this material.
