Zinc bromide is an inorganic compound that is used as a pharmaceutical drug. It is approved for use in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, which is caused by an overactive immune system. Zinc bromide works by decreasing the production of inflammatory cytokines and increasing the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines. The reaction mechanism for zinc bromide involves a hydroxyl group attacking a phosphorus pentoxide to form a phosphate ester intermediate. This process could also be used to treat bowel disease, as copper chloride and sodium carbonate are also involved in the reaction. The surface methodology of zinc bromide was investigated using scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction data was collected to determine its structure. Nitrogen atoms can coordinate with zinc ions through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and this may play a role in its binding properties.
