3-Methoxybenzophenone is a monosubstituted carbanion that can be prepared by the reaction of an alkyl halide with potassium t-butoxide in the presence of light. This compound is a precursor to cross-coupling reactions, which are used to synthesize organometallic compounds. The interaction between 3-methoxybenzophenone and benzoyl chloride leads to the formation of an exciplex, which absorbs light at wavelengths shorter than 290 nm. The exciplex then decomposes into two free radicals that react with each other, leading to the formation of biphenyl-2-carboxylic acid.
