It has been shown that this compound undergoes an oxidative DNA reaction with hydrochloric acid and sodium salts in the presence of sunlight, producing a color change from yellow to red. The photochromization process can also be activated by radiation and electrochemical detection. 2-(Hydroxyimino)naphthalen-1(2H)-one is stable under acidic conditions, but reactivity increases under basic conditions. This chemical has also been used as a metal chelate in radiation activation experiments.
