2-Cyclohexylcyclohexanol is a hydrocarbon that has a mixture of cis and trans isomers. It is an intermediate in the reaction pathway to cyclohexane, which is used as a precursor for the production of biofuels. The reaction mechanism begins with the addition of hydrogen chloride to 2-cyclohexylcyclohexanol to form the chloride ion and cyclohexene. Cyclohexene then reacts with phosphorus pentoxide to form cyclohexanol. The cis and trans isomers are formed by dehydrating this compound. By using titration, it can be determined which isomer is present in a given sample by observing whether the acid or base titrates first. This chemical also binds to naphthalene and has binding constants that depend on pH level.
