2-Oxopropyl benzoate is a potent cytostatic agent with a reaction mechanism involving the reduction of ferrocenecarboxylic acid to ferrocene and subsequent electrophilic attack on the benzoyl moiety. This compound has been shown to exhibit tumorigenicity in animals and also exhibits cytostatic effects in vitro, as well as being resistant to chloroacetone-induced tumorigenicity in animals. The drug binds to DNA and inhibits DNA synthesis by inhibiting RNA transcription. It also reduces the production of reactive oxygen species, thereby inhibiting cell proliferation. 2-Oxopropyl benzoate has been shown to be an effective treatment for tumors in mice that are resistant to other chemotherapeutic agents such as cyclophosphamide, etoposide, cisplatin, and doxorubicin.
