2-[(4-Chlorophenyl)sulfanyl]-2-methylpropanal is a lipophilic compound that has been used in studies on lipid metabolism. It is orally active and can be administered to humans. 2-[(4-Chlorophenyl)sulfanyl]-2-methylpropanal is metabolized in the liver by hydroxylation, yielding a sulfoxide, which undergoes further oxidation to a sulfone. Methoxy groups are also introduced during metabolism and these may play a role in its activity. 2-[(4-Chlorophenyl)sulfanyl]-2-methylpropanal inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol, leading to decreased levels of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
2-[(4-Chlorophenyl)sulfanyl]-2-methylpropanal has been shown to be effective against atherosclerosis in rabbits fed with high fat diets. This drug also inhibits the production of lipids, including cholesterol
