It is an oxidized compound that reacts with hydrogen peroxide and ethylene in the presence of pyridine to produce 4-chloro-2-methylbut-2-enoic acid ethyl ester, which can then be hydrolyzed to produce 4-chloro-2-methylbutanoic acid ethyl ester. This reaction is catalyzed by lansoprazole. The industrial synthesis of 2-methylbutanoic acid ethyl ester from 2-methylbutanol and acetic acid has been successfully achieved on a large scale by reacting the former with chloromethyl peroxide.
