4-Hydroxy-6-pentyl-2H-pyran-2-one is a reactive compound that is used in the synthesis of various drugs. It has been shown to be an oxidation catalyst and an aminoacylating agent for the preparation of a variety of pharmaceuticals. 4-Hydroxy-6-pentyl-2H-pyran-2-one can be used as an optical sensor for determining blood pH levels. This compound also has been found to have antihelminthic properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit fatty acid synthase and block the biosynthesis of lipids, including phospholipids.
