1-Bromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (1BDMH) is a fluorescent compound that can be used as a probe for sodium carbonate. The fluorescence resonance of 1BDMH has been shown to be sensitive to the external environment and changes in the environment have been detected using vibrational spectroscopy. The primary amines of 1BDMH are susceptible to spontaneous reactions with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and other compounds containing sulfur or oxygen. These reactions result in the formation of products with different functional groups and molecules. 1BDMH is enantiopure and its optical properties change when it reacts with other molecules, which can be observed by nmr spectroscopy.
