Phosphonium, tributylethyl-, bromide (PTEB) is a catalyst. A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate at which a chemical reaction proceeds by lowering the activation energy for the reaction. It does this by providing an alternative pathway for the reaction to occur in, or through its effect on the reactants and products. PTEB has been used as a catalyst in organic synthesis because of its high activity.
