Tetrahydrocoptisine is an alkaloid that is found in the plants Curcuma aromatica, Trifolium repens, and other plants. Tetrahydrocoptisine has been shown to have a synergic effect with protopine, a precursor of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Tetrahydrocoptisine inhibits signal pathways in liver cells, which leads to the inhibition of fatty acid synthesis and cholesterol biosynthesis. The compound also has anti-inflammatory effects. Tetrahydrocoptisine may be metabolized by methyl transferase enzymes to produce estradiol benzoate. This chemical can also be used as an analytical method for detecting alkaloids.
