Beschreibung

Pivmecillinam hydrochloride is a prodrug that is converted by hydrolysis to ampicillin after oral administration. It is used in the treatment of lower urinary tract infections and other bacterial infections, such as ear infections. Pivmecillinam hydrochloride has a high resistance to gram-positive bacteria, but is less active against gram-negative species. Pivmecillinam hydrochloride has been shown to be effective against some strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis, but not against Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Escherichia coli. It is also active against Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae, but not against Neisseria meningitidis.
