1-(4-Nitrobenzenesulfonyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole (NBT) is a synthetic reagent that is used in the synthesis of nucleic acids. It has been shown to be an efficient nucleotide phosphorylating agent and can be used to synthesize oligodeoxyribonucleotides using low yields of chloride. NBT is also used as a sulfonation reagent in the synthesis of mesitylenesulfonyl chlorides, which are useful for the preparation of sulfonamides. The mechanism of NBT’s reaction with nucleic acids has not been fully elucidated, but it is thought that it may act by forming a covalent bond with DNA or RNA.
