It is synthesized by reacting an alkyl malonate with an aluminium chloride. DMCPM has been shown to initiate free radical polymerization of various monomers and polymers, such as polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), and poly(vinyl acetate). This compound also has high activity in the production of polypropylene from ethylene, propylene, and butadiene. DMCPM can be synthesized from magnesium metal and a hydrocarbon group.
