Beschreibung

Oxopropanoic acid is a cyclic dicarboxylic acid that is produced by the degradation of malonic acid. It can be used as a nutrient for yeast fermentation, as well as in the production of other chemicals. Oxopropanoic acid undergoes a cycle involving glyoxylate and malate. The 2-ketoacid dehydrogenase enzyme (thiokinase) converts oxopropanoic acid to pyruvic acid, which then reacts with the enzyme malate synthase to produce malate. Malate is converted to oxaloacetate by the enzyme malate dehydrogenase, which is then converted back to oxopropanoic acid by the enzyme transcarboxylase. The chemical reaction in this cycle produces hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide gas. Oxopropanoic acid also has an abrasive property and can be used in dentistry or as a detergent additive.
