Saikosaponin B3 is a quinic acid derivative that has been shown to inhibit the expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) and induce apoptosis in PC12 cells. This compound also inhibits the activation of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in melanoma cells. Saikosaponin B3 is found in plants such as Cephalotaxus harringtonii, which are used for traditional Chinese medicine. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of Listeria monocytogenes and prevent DNA replication by binding to the polymerase chain reaction enzyme during replication. Saikosaponin B3 is also an indole alkaloid with anti-inflammatory properties that have been studied experimentally.
