9-Oxonerolidol is a phytoalexin that is produced by plants in response to infection by human pathogens. It has been shown that 9-oxonerolidol inhibits bacterial growth and induces programmed cell death (apoptosis) in cancer cells. 9-Oxonerolidol also has an inhibitory effect against Staphylococcus aureus and other bacteria. The mode of action of 9-oxonerolidol is not well understood, but it may be due to its ability to inhibit transcription or polymerase chain reaction, which are both necessary for the synthesis of DNA. This compound also has a geometric isomer, which has been shown to have antibacterial activity.
