4-Phenylpiridine-4-carboxylic acid (PPCC) is a n-oxide that can be found in the urine of patients who have been given PPCC as a drug, and is used in the treatment of renal transplantation. It is also used for abdominal surgery and has an elimination rate of approximately 500 mL/min. 4-Phenylpiridine-4-carboxylic acid is metabolized to normeperidine, which has a half life of about 2 hours. Normeperidine may be detected in the urine for several days following administration. This drug is converted to an acid conjugate, ester hydrochloride, or chlorine atom. The major pathway for elimination of PPCC involves conjugation with α1-acid glycoprotein to form phenylphenoxyacetic acid (PPAA).
