Gabapentin is a drug that has been used to treat chronic cough. It is hypothesized that the matrix effect of gabapentin may be due to its ability to inhibit voltage-dependent calcium channels, which are involved in neurotransmission and cell function. Gabapentin has also been found to have an anti-inflammatory effect on the airways. It is thought that this effect may be related to its pharmacological activity as an interferon alfa-2b enhancer, although this needs further research. The efficacy of gabapentin for treating chronic cough has been demonstrated in vitro using human lung cells. Gabapentin has also shown some success in treating neuropathic pain, with animal studies suggesting that it may inhibit neuronal death by preventing glutamate release from nerve endings. Gabapentin has been shown to interact with other drugs through the inhibition of liver enzymes such as cytochrome P450 3A4 and 2C9, which can lead to increased blood concentrations of these drugs.
