Z-Asp(OMe)-Glu(OMe)-Val-DL-Asp(OMe)-fluoromethylketone is a pro-apoptotic compound that inhibits the mitochondrial function and induces apoptosis. It has been shown to inhibit the production of mitochondrial membrane potential in hl-60 cells, leading to neuronal death. The low potency of this compound may be due to its inability to cross the cell membrane and interact with mitochondria or it may be due to its rapid conversion to inactive metabolites. This drug is also an inhibitor of methyltransferase activity, which will disrupt mitochondrial functions. Z-Asp(OMe)-Glu(OMe)-Val-DL-Asp(OMe)-fluoromethylketone has been shown to induce caspase 3 activation, which leads to apoptosis.
