21-Deoxyvomilenine is a natural product that belongs to the group of pyrrolizidine alkaloids. It was first isolated in 1967 from the plant Vinca major. In vitro experiments have shown that 21-deoxyvomilenine inhibits acyltransferases and prevents bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis, which may be due to its structural similarity to vinblastine. The structure of 21-deoxyvomilenine has been determined using X-ray crystallography, and it has been found to bind to the ribosomal RNA binding site in an unusual pattern. 21-deoxyvomilenine has also been shown to inhibit the formation of polymers of DNA (polymerase chain reaction) in vitro, which may be due to its ability to inhibit polymerase activity.
