2,3-Dichlorocinnamic acid is a phenylpropiolic acid that can be produced by the reaction of sulfuryl chloride with an acid form of phenylpropiolic acid. 2,3-Dichlorocinnamic acid is also formed from the reaction of pyridine and chloroacetic acid. It can be converted to 2,3-dichlorocinnamic acid by treatment with chlorine gas in the presence of a Lewis base such as methyl ether or dimethylformamide. This compound has two isomers, one which is present in small quantities in nature and the other which predominates in synthetic preparations. The pathways of synthesis for this compound are sulfur and chlorine.
